The Sustainable Living Festival is set to return to Launceston at the Inveresk Precinct in March 2024, with a central theme of "Going Circular." The Festival will be headlined by Craig Reucassel, the renowned television personality and environmental advocate from the ABC’s ‘War on Waste’.
During a gathering at the precinct’s University of Tasmania Community Garden on Wednesday, the City of Launceston Mayor, Matt Garwood, officially launched the Festival with a ceremonial lettuce planting.
“What a fabulous event in a fabulous location!” he said. “I took part in the last Sustainable Living Festival in 2021 at Riverside, and I commend Tamar NRM for putting it on again.”
Mayors Christina Holmdahl from West Tamar Council and Greg Kieser from George Town Council also attended the launch and gave their wholehearted support for the event.
The Festival's theme of "Going Circular" invites the community to celebrate and embrace circular principles in their everyday choices, emphasising the importance of sustainable living. The event is free and will take place on Saturday, March 2nd, from 10am to 4pm at the Inveresk Precinct.
The Festival will feature a week of associated events and activities leading to the Festival day. The coordinators are now seeking expressions of interest for exhibitors, food vendors, presenters, activity and workshop hosts, entertainers, and artists to bring the Festival to life. Nominations for the Sustainable Living Business and Community Awards can also now be made.
Ben Hooper, President of Tamar NRM, credited the Tamar NRM's Sustainable Community Working Group for organising the Festival.
"This is the second Festival the working group has staged, and I have no doubt it will be bigger and better than the last," said Ben.
The Festival aims to showcase existing circular economy practices in the region and promote the principles of circularity to the community. It is a free family event focusing on sharing knowledge, making connections, and encouraging the circular economy principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, regenerating natural systems, repairing, reusing, repurposing, recycling, rethinking design, and remanufacturing.
