Get ready for the BIG Plant!

The goal is 5,000 trees in 4 days. The countdown begins on Thursday, 28 July. Are you in?

The City of Launceston has engaged Tamar NRM to plant 5,000 trees at the Launceston Waste Centre revegetation site.  This is going to be a HUGE community effort and we need YOUR help to plant them!

Come and plant one tree or many!

How do you get involved?

5,000 trees over 4 days is a logistical challenge!  Register your interest and your most preferred timeslot using the link below.

This will help us to organise the day and make it as streamlined as possible. If you are a group of more than 10 registration is highly recommended we will get in touch with you directly to ensure we support you with your tree planting goals.

We also need volunteers to help with other activities on the day, such as check-ins, helping groups to plant trees and escorting groups to their planting site. Training will be provided.

What can you expect?

– Staking and fixing tree guards

– Encouraging the plants to grow!

Equipment will be provided!

At the site, instructions will be provided along with a brief explanation about the types of trees being planted and why this project is so important.

It may be wet and boggy!  All we ask is that you wear gardening gloves (if you have them), suitable shoes and clothing to suit the weather, a bottle of water, and snacks as needed.

Where is the planting?

The planting site is behind the Launceston Waste Centre.

The meeting point is the entry of the Launceston Waste Centre, 19 Cavalry road, Mowbray. A minibus will be waiting for you to transfer you to the planting site (2 min drive) as it is not accessible by foot.  If you have mobility issues please get in touch so we can see how we can help!

When is the planting?

Planting will happen between 9 am and 3 pm, from Thursday, 28 July to Sunday, 31 July. When you register, please indicate the best time/s that suit you to come along.

Project Background

The BIG Plant is one of several commitments in the City Of Launceston’s environmental management plan for the Launceston Waste Centre.  Its primary aim is to improve the visual amenity of the site and to provide a vegetation buffer to the neighbouring communities in the event of future landfill development. The City of Launceston’s commitments includes progressive revegetation within the existing native vegetation with an even spread of plants at various heights and ages across the 83,568m2 of land identified for revegetation. Stage 1 will see 10,000 native species planted with 5,000 of these set aside to be planted by the community. The planting site provides participants views of the active landfill and composting facility to see firsthand the challenges faced by landfilling but also the diversion opportunities that things like the compost facility provide the community.

The BIG Plant will also help mitigate the impacts of landfill operations by improving biodiversity and the natural values of the area by enhancing vegetation and habitat quality and reducing the likelihood of weeds.

As part of the City of Launceston’s Sustainability action plan 2022-2030  The BIG Plant contributes to the following actions:

Natural Capital – (Value, protect and promote our natural capital)

  • 5.15 Support revegetation projects to reduce fragmentation of native vegetation and improve connectivity for fauna populations that have become isolated due to land clearing
  • 5.17 Improve environmental awareness among our employees
  • 5.20 Establish engagement programs with local schools to improve the understanding of our natural capital and ecosystem services

The full plan can be viewed on the City of Launceston website.

The event is finished.
